Nex Cubed Founder Spotlight: Family Proud

Since its inception, Nex Cubed has been investing in and accelerating diverse founders who are solving problems that matter by providing early-stage capital, resources, community, and hands-on support based on the founder’s priorities. To date, Nex Cubed has invested in over 80 portfolio companies that have an aggregate value of over a billion dollars, with nearly 65% being led by female or minority founders.

Through our Founder Spotlight Series, we’re showcasing the diverse experiences and perspectives of founders who have participated in our accelerator. We hope these stories, ideas, and insights inspire and motivate fellow entrepreneurs.

Up next is Jaden Risner, Founder & CEO of Family Proud.

Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired your entrepreneurial journey?

I spent 12 years in the Navy as a helicopter pilot supporting search and rescue and special operations. I left active duty to help become a caregiver for my mother and was inspired to transform how we support our loved ones.

What problem is your startup solving and what inspired you to tackle this particular issue?

Family Proud is a community platform designed to help employers understand the impact of caregiving on their workforce, addressing the problem of employers losing $33 billion a year due to caregiving responsibilities. Through our comprehensive care assessment and direct support, including guidance, training, and partner connectivity, we save time and provide peace of mind to employees and their families. Our solution empowers employers to create a supportive work environment while benefiting from valuable insights provided by our care assessment and community platform.

Can you discuss any significant pivots or strategic decisions that have had a major impact on the company's trajectory?

Family Proud started as a direct B2B for Healthcare organizations as a licensed technology offering. We made the decision to reposition towards employers after refining our strategy around how to meet families where they are and ultimately have a larger growth channel.

Where do you see your company in 5 years? What impact do you hope to have?

In 5 years, I see Family Proud being across the United States and a part of the standard offering by employers to their families. I see us in the early deployment of a global strategy. I believe Family Proud has the ability to support companies globally as families do not see borders.

How have your background and previous experiences influenced your approach as a founder?

As a veteran entrepreneur, I believe my background has contributed to the tenacity and grit that is required to be a founder of an early-stage startup. My experience in the military provides a ton of perspective around the daily execution that is required and the prioritization of tasks.

What Nex Cubed resources or programs have been most helpful to you in launching your startup?

Nex Cubed has provided a community of experts who have supported Family Proud’s growth, including advisors and investors.

Are there any specific lessons or insights you've gained throughout your journey as a founder that you'd like to share?

The biggest recommendation I have for anyone looking to begin a startup journey is to make sure there is a clear expectation that it is an ultra-marathon and to prioritize self-care for both you and your team.

What advice would you give to other founders about fundraising?

It is important to build relationships early and to maintain a strong cadence of regular communication and updates for your prospective investors. Building in public allows you to co-communicate and demonstrate attractive momentum.
