HBCU Founders Accelerator Fall 2023 Cohort Spotlight: Meet Antonio Depina from SCOUTZ

Last Fall, we launched the second cohort of the HBCU Founders Accelerator Program. Over the next several weeks, we’re excited to spotlight each of the exceptional founders and their unique journeys. Up first, meet Antonio Depina from SCOUTZ!

Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired your entrepreneurial journey?

As a former college and pro athlete, my entrepreneurial journey was inspired by my mother. Recognizing a problem in sports recruiting, I founded SCOUTZ to address it. Entrepreneurship has been a part of me since age 11, starting with selling candy for AAU fees to drawing and selling artwork in 5th grade.

What problem is your startup solving and what inspired you to tackle this issue?

SCOUTZ addresses the challenge of sports recruiting by connecting athletes and coaches through an automated platform. The inspiration to tackle this issue stems from recognizing the inefficiencies in traditional recruiting processes, aiming to streamline and enhance the experience for both athletes and coaches.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you have faced while building your startup, and how did you overcome them?

Building SCOUTZ has come with its share of challenges. Navigating initial funding hurdles, establishing market presence, and fine-tuning the platform for optimal user experience were significant obstacles. Overcoming involved strategic fundraising efforts, persistent marketing strategies, and continuous feedback-driven improvements to ensure SCOUTZ met the evolving needs of athletes and coaches.

How have your background and previous experiences influenced your approach as a founder?

My background as a former college and pro athlete has instilled a deep understanding of the sports industry's nuances. Pairing this with my early entrepreneurial ventures since the age of 11, I bring a unique perspective to SCOUTZ. The combination of sports insight and entrepreneurial spirit shapes my approach, emphasizing innovation, resilience, and a user-centric mindset in building and growing the platform.

Where do you see your company in 5 years and how do you see it impacting your community?

In five years, I envision SCOUTZ as a leading force in sports recruiting, fostering connections globally. The platform's impact on the community includes providing opportunities for aspiring athletes, simplifying recruitment for coaches, and contributing to the overall growth of sports talent. By facilitating these connections, SCOUTZ aims to empower individuals and communities through enhanced access to athletic opportunities and a streamlined recruiting process.

What led you to become interested in Nex Cubed? What resources do you believe will be most helpful?

My interest in Nex Cubed stems from its reputation for fostering innovation and supporting diverse entrepreneurial communities. The HBCU founder community within Nex Cubed aligns with my vision, providing a valuable network where experiences and challenges are understood on a deeper level. Access to investors who appreciate the unique journey of HBCU founders will be instrumental, offering tailored support crucial for the success of SCOUTZ.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a startup founder so far?

The most valuable lesson learned as a startup founder is the importance of adaptability. Being open to feedback, pivoting when necessary, and continuously evolving based on user needs and market dynamics are crucial. Flexibility and resilience in the face of challenges contribute significantly to the long-term success and growth of the startup.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are looking to make their mark in the industry?

My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to embrace resilience and continuous learning. Be prepared for challenges, stay adaptable, and use setbacks as opportunities for growth. Building a strong network, seeking mentorship, and staying focused on providing real value to your audience will be key to making a lasting mark in the industry.

What advice would you give to other HBCU entrepreneurs around fundraising?

For HBCU entrepreneurs navigating fundraising, building relationships is paramount. Leverage the HBCU founder community and seek investors who understand your unique journey. Clearly articulate your vision, demonstrate the impact of your startup, and emphasize the value it brings to underserved communities. Be persistent, learn from feedback, and showcase how your HBCU background enriches the innovation you bring to the table.
